Stephen James Chadwick was born in 1863 in Roseburg, Oregon. He was the son of Stephen Fowler Chadwick, who served as Oregon secretary of state and Oregon governor. Stephen James Chadwick received his academic training in Willamette University and University of Oregon. In 1885, he was admitted to the bar and moved to Colfax, Washington. Stephen Fowler Chadwick was born in Colfax, Washington, in 1894, the son of Stephen J. Chadwick, who was a judge of the Supreme Court of the state of Washington and its chief justice from 1918-1919. Stephen F. Chadwick attended schools in Colfax and Olympia, Washington, and then the University of Washington, 1911-1912.
